Schoep’s Ice Cream Company, now at 514 Division Street in Madison, Wisconsin, was founded by Madison grocer E.J. Schoephoerster, who began to make ice cream in the back of his store on the corner of La Follette and Ohio Avenues in 1928. The business was sold to P.B. Thomsen, a butter maker from Windsor, Wisconsin, in 1937. The factory moved to 514 Division Street in 1940 and is still run by the Thomsen family, making more than 12 million gallons of ice cream in 75 flavors each year. The Schoep's "Home Pak" line was first introduced after World War II and is still the heart of the Schoep's product line today.
Recently retired company president Paul Thomsen started working at the plant when he was nine. In the 1940s, during his earliest employment, he made popsicles at the rate of 40 cents an hour, which was shared with four other workers. Headquarters: John-Inventory Specialist, Rich-Operations Manager, Alan-Vice President of National Sales, and Eric-Director of Food Safety. Our current President and CEO, Tim Timm, has worked in the ice cream industry for 42 years. He spent a majority of those years in senior management positions and has expertise in all aspects of manufacturing safe quality foods. Allan Hefty, our Vice President of Production has extensive experience in the dairy industry and manages all aspects of our manufacturing facility. Roger Bunders is Vice President of Administration and heads up our Information Technology and Communications Department. Roger dedicates many hours to researching, utilizing and maintaining the most effective technology to manage the flow of information both internally and externally.
The company has steadily expanded and, in addition to 15 Direct Store Delivery trucks covering Wisconsin and areas of surrounding states, Schoep’s now ships products to 45 states across the country and to Alaska and Puerto Rico. In 1999, Schoep’s purchased Gilles Frozen Custard which consistently ranks as the top super premium brand in the greater Milwaukee market. Schoep's also manufactures frozen yogurt, lite ice cream, sherbet and novelties. Considering our modest start in 1928, we are proud of our current ranking as Wisconsin's oldest and largest independent ice cream manufacturer.
Christine Hartman has been the Sales Coordinator for Schoep’s Ice Cream for almost 14 years. She has a degree in Home Economics in Business from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and loves to explore many aspects of food including recipe development and testing, food styling and the culture and history of food.
